"Summer opens the door and lets you out"
...and these lush tropical paintings are finally out of my head and in to reality.
I spent some time last summer in Los Angeles. I taught a few classes, caught up with friends, saw some fabulous shows - Mickalene Thomas at the Broad was a cracker.
I also had time to relax and think.
The Pool Party series fell out of that experience. I brought my figures poolside. The pool represents all the wonderful things attached to nature and the outdoors, while also being very closely connected with hearth and home.
I've also leaned further into my demented obsession for handcrafting: making timber panels, laying wallpaper, mastering resin, and hand-colouring grout between pool tiles.
Speaking of homes, I'm just about qualified to build a house.
Tinted resin adds a really special glossy depth to the water in each painting.
Photos never do the work justice.
